Agri-Business is Big Business for Union County01 April 2014 - Tags: Union County
With Spring here and the tractors heading out into the fields after a long, cold and wet winter, I thought it might be a good time to briefly discuss some of the efforts our office has been focused on with regards to our Agriculture Industry. As many of you know, Union County ranks in the Top 3 of almost every category of agriculture production in the State of North Carolina. From chicken and other poultry, eggs, to row crops (i.e. corn, wheat and soy beans) and equine, Union County is a leader. Because of these incredible resources and industry, our office has begun a concerted effort to work with the business men and women of the AG community to find ways to recruit traditional economic development activities which support their efforts.
Since October of last year, we have attended the Sunbelt Ag Expo in Moultrie, GA; the Southern Farm Show in Raleigh and the National Farm Show in Louisville, KY. We have also sat down with several of the local farmers in an attempt to better understand their needs close to home. Armed with all this data, we have begun to develop and implement the strategies of our Agri-Business Initiative.
We feel that in the next several years, everyone will see the significant growth of this industry in Union County by the efforts we are providing the AG community. From the County Commissioners to the folks that participate in the "farm to table" programs, everyone realizes the value and impact agriculture has in our community and we want to continue to aid in its growth, enhancement and competitiveness in the world marketplace.
